Short answer: a useful precision steel strip RFQ should include the grade, thickness, width, tolerance, delivery condition, edge, surface, quantity, end use and destination. These details allow a supplier to review whether the complete specification—not just one dimension—is feasible.
Steel Strip RFQ Checklist
| Information | What to provide | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Grade and standard | For example, SK5 to an identified JIS specification | Similar trade names may not have identical requirements across standards or editions. |
| Thickness | Nominal thickness in mm | Thickness affects rolling route, condition and feasibility. |
| Width | Finished slit width or master-coil width | Width affects slitting, edge condition and coil format. |
| Tolerance | Permitted thickness and width variation | A tolerance must be agreed together with the measurement method. |
| Delivery condition | Annealed, cold rolled, hardened and tempered, or another agreed condition | The starting condition must suit the buyer’s forming and heat-treatment process. |
| Edge | Slit, deburred, rounded or another drawing requirement | Edge condition can affect forming, handling and the finished component. |
| Surface | Bright, polished, blue, oiled or an agreed reference sample | Surface expectations should be defined before production. |
| Coil requirements | Coil ID, maximum OD, maximum weight and winding preference | The coil must fit the buyer’s feeding and handling equipment. |
| Testing | Required inspection, report or acceptance criteria | Testing scope must be confirmed before quotation and production. |
| Quantity and destination | Trial and production quantity, city/country or port | These details affect packing, transport and the commercial quotation. |

Why the End Use Should Be Included
The same nominal grade and dimensions may be used in different ways. A strip intended for stamping, bending, heat treatment, grinding or direct assembly can require a different starting condition, edge or surface. Describing the finished component helps the supplier identify questions that are missing from the RFQ; it does not replace the buyer’s drawing or acceptance specification.
Dimensions Must Be Reviewed as a Combination
Hengtaifeng’s overall product discussions may cover thicknesses from approximately 0.01 mm to 10 mm and widths up to approximately 1000 mm. This is not a promise that every grade, condition, width and tolerance combination is available. Feasibility depends on the complete material and order specification and must be confirmed before quotation.
Common RFQ Problems
- Providing only a grade and quantity, without dimensions or condition.
- Requesting a tight tolerance without stating how and where it will be measured.
- Using “hard” or “spring temper” without an agreed hardness or tensile-strength requirement.
- Omitting coil ID, maximum coil weight or equipment limitations.
- Assuming equivalent grade names are automatically interchangeable.
- Requesting certificates or special tests only after the commercial terms are agreed.
Frequently Asked Questions
What information is required for a precision steel strip quote?
Provide the grade or standard, thickness, width, dimensional tolerance, delivery condition, edge, surface, quantity, end use and delivery destination. A drawing or existing specification is also useful when available.
Can a supplier quote from dimensions alone?
Dimensions alone are usually insufficient because grade, condition, tolerance, edge and testing requirements can change manufacturing feasibility and price.
Should I specify annealed or hardened and tempered strip?
Choose the condition according to downstream processing. Parts that require substantial forming may need an annealed starting condition, while some applications can use strip supplied to an agreed hardened and tempered condition.
